NMN enhances exercise endurance
Along with exercise, NMN supplements are effective in increasing exercise performance and endurance in middle-aged athletes by improving aerobic capacity. The research has shown that across the globe athletes are finding ways to improve their endurance and performance. In recent years, several substantial studies in rodents have shown that the supplementation of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) enhances exercise endurance. But, do these NMN-related exercise and performance benefits are also for humans?
For this purpose, a human study was conducted by Hu and colleagues at Guangzhou Sports University. Was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports and Nutrition. The study has revealed that the oral intake of NMN powder can significantly elevate the aerobic capacity (the consumption of oxygen by muscles) in adult runners. Do NMN supplements give physiological benefits to humans?
Over the past decade, an animal study has revealed that the NMN supplements have a positive effect on rodents on exercise performance, healthy aging, and better longevity. For example, NMN increases energy production, which ultimately improves physical endurance by 50%. In addition, supports several physiological characteristics including insulin sensitivity and neuron functions.
Moreover, some researches have revealed that NMN supplements also improve insulin sensitivity and muscle functions in pre-diabetic women and men aged 60 years.
Combining training with NMN to improves exercise endurance
To investigate whether middle-aged and healthy athletes also get similar benefits of NMN, Hu and colleagues supplemented runners with 300, 600, or 1200 mg of NMN powder for 6 weeks. In this duration, these 3 dosage groups were trained 5 to 6 times per week for 40 to 60 minutes and then exposed to lung and heart exercise testing.
The results of endurance exercise testing have revealed that the NMN supplements significantly improve the body’s ability to absorb oxygen and deliver to body tissues with 600 and 1200 mg/day dosages.
The table reveals that the athletes taking NMN supplements have more oxygen uptake and aerobic power as compared to those who did not.
NMN high doses are well-tolerated
Hu and colleagues also examined whether NMN supplements harm runners or not. Interestingly, none of the runners showed side effects such as abnormality in heartbeat. So, this supplement is safe and well-tolerated at a 1200 mg/day dose level.
The study findings suggest that NMN supplements are effective in improving oxygen-utilization capacity in middle-aged athletes. It can also improve their exercise performance and endurance.
